tennis shoes, plimsolls. The word may echo the sound of light footfalls or derive from an archaic dialect verb meaning to 'dart' or 'pad'. 'Daps' was a particularly popular term among teen-agers and schoolchildren in Wales and the Southwest in the 1960s.
